Lecanto, Florida — A federal investigation into alleged corruption at the Citrus County Detention Facility has resulted in criminal charges against several employees and inmates accused of participating in a bribery and contraband-smuggling operation inside the jail.

Federal prosecutors allege that correctional officers Justin Harvey and Dekarri Nixon, along with commissary employee Courtney Smith, used their positions to facilitate the movement of prohibited items into the detention facility in exchange for money. Several inmates and outside associates were also charged as part of the investigation.

According to court documents, investigators uncovered evidence suggesting that contraband, including cellular phones and other unauthorized items, was brought into the Lecanto facility through an organized scheme involving both staff members and inmates. Authorities contend the operation compromised institutional security and violated federal laws governing correctional facilities.

The charges stem from a months-long investigation conducted by federal law enforcement agencies. Prosecutors allege the defendants accepted payments and coordinated with inmates to bypass security measures designed to prevent prohibited items from entering secure housing areas.

Law enforcement officials say contraband cell phones present a significant challenge for detention facilities nationwide because they allow inmates to communicate outside official monitoring systems. Authorities allege the scheme provided inmates access to devices and services prohibited under facility regulations.

The case has generated renewed discussion about accountability and oversight within correctional institutions. Public officials have emphasized that detention employees are entrusted with maintaining safety, security and public confidence in the criminal justice system.

Harvey, Nixon and Smith each face federal charges related to bribery and the introduction of contraband into a correctional facility. Additional defendants were charged in connection with the alleged conspiracy.

Federal prosecutors have not announced trial dates. The investigation remains active, and authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges.
